A digital nomad according to Merriam Webster dictionary, is someone who performs their occupation entirely over the Internet while traveling.
Digital nomads are location-independent professionals who use technology to perform their job. Digital nomads work remotely, telecommuting rather than being physically present at a company’s headquarters or office.
Greece introduced law 4825/2021 in September 2021, where a third-country national (non-EU) who wishes to work remotely from Greece, can apply for a Digital Nomad Visa. Holders of a Digital Nomad Visa have the right to legally reside in Greece.
To qualify for a digital nomad visa, the applicants are either dependent employees or self-employed persons, working remotely with employers or clients outside Greece. Family members can be included, together with the main applicant, for the same period.
To be eligible for a Digital Nomad Visa, the applicant is required to provide evidence that he/she has a stable income, no less than three and a half thousand (3,500€) euros per month. The minimum amount refers to the net income, after payment of the relevant taxes. The above amount is increased by twenty percent (20%) for the spouse or cohabitant and by fifteen percent (15%) for each child.
The initial digital nomad visa is valid for a period of up to 12 months. The visa holder can apply for a 2-year extension of the visa (Digital Nomad residence).
- Holders of a digital nomad visa have no access right to Greek-dependent employment or business activity in Greece.
- Holders of the digital nomad residency permit are required to reside in Greece for a minimum of 6 months every year.
